Award Overview

Student Deadline to Graduate Unit: May 1, 2017

Level of Study: Master’s or doctoral (depending on awards’ criteria)

Required Legal Status: Domestic or international (depending on awards’ criteria)

Results: July 2017

Purpose:

Through the generous support of numerous donors, a number of endowed awards have been established at the School of Graduate Studies. This year, approximately 16 awards with individual eligibility criteria and values are offered within the 2017-2018 SGS University-Wide Awards competition.

The application-form and individual award descriptions can be found on the SGS Website (see under University-Wide Awards).

Please read below for the specific awards that are open to our Faculty.

Eligibility:

Incoming students (starting in September 2017): Please read individual award's eligibility criteria before applying.

Current students:

  • Must be registered at the time of application. Students returning in September 2017 to complete their degree are eligible;
  • Students convocating in June 2017 are not eligible;
  • iSchool Master's students who have been accepted into a doctoral program are eligible for incoming awards only.

May apply for the following awards:

Need Based/ OSOTF Awards

  • Awards categorized as need based only do not take applicants’ academic merit / transcripts into consideration
  • Awards categorized as “OSOTF” are only open to eligible applicants who:
    • Demonstrate financial need within the application’s Financial Need Assessment section;
    • Are Canadian citizens, Permanent Residents of Canada or Protected Persons at the time of the application; and
    • Are residents of Ontario at the time of the application, as defined by one of the following criteria:
      • Student has always lived in Ontario
      • Ontario is the last province student lived in for 12 months in a row before beginning his/her current graduate program
      • Student lives in Ontario now AND has lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row

If student is married/common-law, student can be considered an Ontario resident if:

spouse has always lived in Ontario or

spouse has lived in Ontario for the last 12 months in a row without being a full-time postsecondary student or

All of these statements are true:

o student now resides in Ontario
o student has lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row
o spouse has lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row

If student qualifies as a dependent student, s/he is considered an Ontario resident if:

Ontario is the last province in which parent(s) have lived in for at least 12 months in a row or

All of these statements are true:

o student now resides in Ontario
o student has lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row
o parent(s) have lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row

Merit Based Awards

  • Awards categorized as merit based only do not take applicants’ financial need into consideration
  • At minimum, applicants must:

o Have achieved at least A- ("A-" = 80%) or equivalent in each of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent);
o Or if the student has competed two years of graduate studies at the time of application, the student must only demonstrate an overall average of at least A- ("A-" = 80%) or equivalent on all graduate courses completed.
 

Application Process

  1. Applicants must fill out the SGS University-Wide Awards Application downloadable from the SGS Website.
  2. Applicants may apply for more than one award within this competition by submitting one complete application package – however, the package must contain all of the required documentation for each of the awards for which the applicant is applying: Letters of reference must be sent directly from the referees to the Faculty of Information (iSchool) by the Faculty of Information’s internal deadline (May 1, 2017)
  3. The Faculty of Information may submit up to 3 nominations for each award within this competition
  4. Ineligible or incomplete applications will not be considered for any of the awards within this competition
