Reporting to the Executive Officer, York University Libraries’ (YUL) Facilities Manager is responsible for effectively managing all aspects of the physical space (approximately 27,116 square metres) of the Scott Library which includes its three branches, the Leslie Frost Library located on the Glendon campus and Peter F. Bronfman Business Library and Steacie Science and Engineering Library, located on the Keele campus. The incumbent works with various CSBO departments including Facilities Development and Facilities Planning to ensure that properties are well maintained, secure, in a suitable and safe state of repair, and that construction and renovation projects from concept to completion meet the needs of YUL.

The incumbent is responsible for the safety and security of the majority of scholarly materials housed in YUL valued at approximately $134 million. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring appropriate security measures are in place to protect York Libraries, staff, students and assets, and works closely with Security Services in this regard. The incumbent serves as the primary Health and Safety Officer and Emergency Response Warden for YUL and is the YUL’s subject matter expert on all health and safety issues.

In addition, the incumbent is responsible for the effective operations and management of staff for the shipping/receiving/mailroom, the Building Services desk, stacks services, copying and printing services.


Education: Undergrad degree in business administration/finance, human resources and/or planning/construction management or a combination of relevant experience (.(e.g. facilities management, planning, security, occupational health & safety, etc.); First aid certification.
Experience: Minimum 5 years recent practical experience preferably in an academic setting and in a unionized environment; Experience in project management and financial management; demonstrated experience developing Health & Safety (H&S), Emergency Response procedures and protocols and responding to compliance issues; A proven track record of using creative and innovative solutions for H&S challenges; Experience training others in aspects of H&S, and Emergency Response, Dangerous Goods, or other related activities; Experience working in a role with a high degree of customer service; property management, renovations experience; supervisory experience in a unionized environment.
Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate effectively with all YUL employees, health, safety and compliance stakeholders including VP's Offices, external agencies, faculty, staff and students; excellent interpersonal skills; demonstrated discretion, diplomacy, tact, good judgment, ability to work independently and collegially; effective leadership and supervisory skills; proven planning, coordination and organizational skills; ability to respond and adapt to a changing, high pressure environment; demonstrated ability to initiate, implement, coordinate and monitor a wide variety of complex and sensitive projects, both short-term and long-term; ability to assess problem situations, recognize issues and use good judgment to devise creative solutions; ability to provide a consistently high level of service to address issues within the Faculty; sound knowledge and commitment to healthy and safe work practices; knowledge of the OHSA, WHMIS and Industrial Regulations, due diligence and duties of supervisors; familiarity with science labs. Proficiency in Microsoft Office including intermediate Microsoft word and excel.
