iSchool Information Technology service delivery update

The iSchool has transitioned to a centralized delivery model of IT and web services.For more details, please refer to the FAQ that was emailed to all current iSchool students, faculty, and staff on December 22, 2015. If you did not receive this email, please contact glenn.cumming[at]utoronto.ca

About IT services & facilities at the iSchool

Network services are now provided to the iSchool community from the Central ITS department of the university. Note to returning students: this is a change from previous years.

UTORid accounts

UTORid is the university-wide network account that allows you to access U of T services such as Acorn, campus wireless service, the official student email account (UTMail+); MS Office web applications, the Learning Portal (Blackboard), licensed electronic resources provided by the University of Toronto Libraries (UTL), and others. File storage & web space

Saving files

All iSchool workstations and laptops use a hard drive protection program called Deep Freeze, which restores the workstation/laptop to its original state upon reboot.  DO NOT SAVE YOUR FILES TO INFORUM WORKSTATIONS OR LAPTOPS!! Please save your files to a USB flash drive.

Storage options

  • A USB flash drive. The Inforum has 2GB USB flash drives for 2 day loan, if you forget yours.
  • Cloud storage for Windows users (MS OneDrive for Business) through Student Advantage and Office 365 ProPlus

Web space

The UTORweb service provides a web server and storage space (50 MB) for personal web pages, pictures, word-processing documents, etc. 
 

Finding a computer

iSchool desktop computers

Workstations are available in the following locations. 

  • Inforum24-hour fob access
  • Margaret Cockshutt e-classroom 224/225  – 24-hour fob access
  • Karen Melville e-classroom 116 – 24-hour fob access

iSchool laptops  

The Inforum maintains an extensive technology loan collection for the use of iSchool students, with loan periods ranging from a day to a week.  The collection includes Dell laptops, MacBook Pros, tablets, and more.

Computers elsewhere on the St George campus

Internet connectivity

Workstations:  All workstations in the Bissell Building are hardwired for Internet access

Wireless access:

  • For personal laptops or Inforum laptops, access to the Internet is via 2 campus wireless networks - 1) UofT for current members of the U of T community; and 2) Eduroam, for visiting scholars.  
  • Your UTORid is required for wireless access.
  • List of Wireless access points on the St George Campus

Access for alumni: The University of Toronto wireless network is only available to current members of the U of T community. There is no wireless access for alumni.

For issues with connectivity or university resources such as Blackboard, UTMail+ and to get help with your personal computing devices, the Information Commons located in the Robarts Library Building can help. The Information Commons has an extensive FAQ collection, so look there too.
